What is happening to Coinbase Commerce?

Coinbase is retiring the original Coinbase Commerce product and moving merchants to Coinbase Business. Per Coinbase's own transition notice, Commerce is being shut down for merchants outside the United States and Singapore, and the replacement, Coinbase Business, is a custodial platform: Coinbase holds your funds so it can offer bank off-ramps and yield.

That is a real change in model. The original Commerce let merchants self-custody; the successor does not. If self-custody was why you chose Commerce, the migration path takes it away, which is exactly why many merchants are now looking for a non-custodial alternative.

Custodial vs non-custodial: what actually changes for you

With a custodial processor, your balance sits inside the provider until it pays you out; you rely on its schedule, its solvency, and its jurisdiction.
